10 Ways to Exercise Your Dog on a Rainy Day

When it’s pouring outside, keeping your dog active can be pretty tough. Trust me, I’ve tried snuggling with Laika while watching TV all day, but she wasn’t thrilled with that plan. Like most dogs, she needs her daily dose of exercise, and a cuddle fest just doesn’t cut it.

The good news? There are some easy indoor activities to keep your dog physically active. Here are 10 fun ways to exercise your dog when the weather keeps you inside:

1. Play Find The Treats

“Find the treats” is an entertaining nose work game that can keep your dog moving indoors. All you need are some treats and your dog’s attention. I usually use chopped carrots, but any treat will do. The idea is to have your dog sniff out treats you’ve hidden around the house.

Start simple by placing treats where your dog can see them and use a cue like “find the treats” to get them started. Once your dog gets the hang of it, hide the treats in more challenging spots, and let your dog use their nose to find them. This game not only keeps your dog active but also gives them a nice mental workout.

2. Play Tug of War

Tug of war is one of Laika’s favorite games and is perfect for indoor exercise. It’s both physically and mentally engaging. You just need a tug toy and your dog’s attention. If you don’t have a tug toy, you can make one from old t-shirts or towels.

The key is to teach your dog that if their teeth touch your hand, the game stops. This teaches them impulse control and manners. Contrary to some beliefs, playing tug won’t make your dog aggressive, and letting them win won’t make them dominant—it’ll just make the game more fun and encourage them to play more. Studies show that dogs who play tug with their owners tend to be more obedient and confident.

3. Use a Stuffed Kong

Stuffed Kongs are a lifesaver on rainy days. They’re easy to prepare and can keep your dog busy for over 30 minutes. I usually fill Laika’s Kong with peanut butter or low-sodium broth mixed with veggies and freeze it overnight. If you need ideas, check out our list of 39 healthy foods you can stuff in a Kong.

Additional Tips:
– Hide and Seek: Have your dog sit and stay while you hide somewhere in the house, then call them to find you.
– Indoor Fetch: If you have enough space, play fetch in a hallway or large room.
– Trick Training: Use indoor time as an opportunity to teach your dog new tricks or commands.
– Puzzle Toys: Invest in some puzzle toys that make your dog solve a challenge to get to a treat.
– Stairs: If you have stairs, get your dog to run up and down them a few times for some good exercise.
– Hallway Sprints: Use a long hallway to play a game of chase or fetch.
– Obstacle Course: Set up a mini obstacle course using furniture and have your dog navigate through it.
– Interactive Toys: Toys that move or make noise on their own can keep your dog engaged.
– Dance Party: Put on some music and dance with your dog to get them moving.

Rainy days don’t have to mean cooped-up dogs. With these creative indoor activities, you can ensure your pup stays happy and healthy even when the weather isn’t cooperating.
